10.Eye In The Sky

Col. Katherine Powell, a military officer in command of an operation to capture terrorists in Kenya, sees her mission escalate when a girl enters the kill zone triggering an international dispute over the implications of modern warfare. This is so tense, suspense and unpredictable in this eye opener with the late Alan Rickman as all the cast is so good and really convincing as well, it has a really good emotional core as you actually care about with these characters in this watchable film.

9.Free State Of Jones

A disillusioned Confederate army deserter return to Mississippi and leads a militia of fellow deserters and women in an uprising against the corrupt local Confederate government. The good thing with this film is they didn’t rely on the main lead as the supporting cast are excellent especially from Gugu Mbatha – Raw as she is a real talent. The final third of this film is really moving and poignancy at the same time, it has got a brilliant story as it is a well-made film.

8.Pearl Harbour

A tale of war and romance mixed in with history. The story follows two lifelong friends and a beautiful nurse who are caught up in the horror of an infamous Sunday morning in 1941. I haven’t see this film for ages as it is one of those film that will linger long in your memory and the war scene is certainly memorable, and the casting is spot on in this thought provoking moving utterly believable as well in this sincere tale of bravery and courage in an all – star cast that the premise is a good one.

7. Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World

During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. Truly epic rousing war film with truly magnificent battle and with beautiful storytelling, good cinematography certainly made this an engrossing film from start to finish in this entertaining film.

6.1917

April 6th, 1917. As a regiment assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap. A brilliant story with great acting that certainly watchable in this insightful film which is captivating throughout in this enjoyable film.

5.The Water Diviner

An Australian man travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to try and locate his three missing sons. Beautifully scenery and with great casting that is so convincing in this sensitively handed film, there is some character development which work really well and its not overcomplicated with the flashback as it is very easy storytelling. Russell Crowe also directed this film as he also star in the main lead which he done very successfully and he does a really good eye opener of a film.

 4.The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society

Free – spirited writer Juliet Ashton forms a life – changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII. Superbly acted with an all – star cast that give you funny one liner and great chemistry that certainly needed in this film, I like the way it flashback very easily and made this simple to follow in this worthwhile addition War film with a romantic subject and it is generally moving.

3.Dunkirk

Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War II. Spectacular and a sincere tale of courage, bravery and heroism made this really gripping with character driven type of film, with characters scatters about and telling their stories retrospectively giving you a worthwhile experience in one of the best Christopher Nolan film.

2.War Horse

Young Albert enlists to serve in World War 1 after his beloved horse is sold to the cavalry. Albert’s hopeful journey takes him out of England and to the front lines as the war rages on. Based on a book by Michael Morpurgo that translate in this well-made film with a lot of convincing acting that turn this cute film into a war epic, it has the cute element of a friendship with the boy with the horse and with the war aspect that blended in really well and it suitable for a family viewing and its Steven Spielberg.

1.The Book Thief

While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, Young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being protected by her adoptive parents. The reason why I put this film first I really like the subject matter of the Holocaust which make this a compelling watch, I also like the drama aspect and the casting is spot on and I really love the ending to this film as it is poignancy and moving at the same time, it is certainly memorable in this amazing film.

  1. Another interesting and varied selection Mark. I think Eye in the Sky was the first film that we saw together.
    To go with 1917 I would recommend All Quiet on The Western Front, and to go with Dunkirk I would add Darkest Hour which has been mentioned i this blog previously.
    I would also add:
    Hacksaw Ridge, Apocalypse Now and MASH as among the best war films.
    Zulu, Waterloo and Henry V from history.
