Mini Film Reviews Volume 63

Nope

The residents of a lonely gulch in inland California bear witness to an uncanny and chilling discovery. I really like the idea to this film and I admire this film that try to be something different, the first 40 minutes of this is superb as this is unpredictable but after that it falters and it never recover, for me personally the flashback element doesn’t really work and it not needed in this film, personally the ending is rather disappointing and you ended up feeling disappointing as well despite you wanted to like this.

Blueback

Follows Abby, a child who befriends a magnificent wild blue groper while diving. When Abby realizes that the fish is under threat, she takes inspiration from her activist mum, Dora, and takes on poachers to save her friend. Firstly, I wanted to like this film as this got potential and the intentions is there, the thing is this feel rather forced and bit too sentimental and with this it hard to care with these characters, the story is there and it is one of those film that have got great idea for this film despite that it doesn’t really gel together and that is a real shame.

The Black Phone

After being abducted by a child killer and locked in a soundproof basement, a 13-year-old boy starts receiving calls on a disconnected phone from the killer’s previous victims. Personally I was looking forward to this film as it got a brilliant story, it is one of those film that got potential but it didn’t really work, the film in general isn’t memorable enough and it hasn’t got the psychological element, like it doesn’t get under your skin as it needed to that with this type of film, the villain isn’t memorable as well and for me personally this is a major let down.

The Magician’s Elephant

An orphaned boy named Peter is told by a fortune teller that an elephant will help him find his lost sister. A cute and heart-warming film that is suitable for all ages and a family viewing type of film, the thing is this feel rather rushed and this isn’t laugh out loud funny but it has got good intentions, despite with those flaws it still a likeable film and the whole film in general is eye catching, it still watchable and it isn’t one of the best animation film but for me personally what save this, is the story itself and the moral is kindness and standing up for yourself.

The Book Thief

While subjected to the horrors of World War II Germany, young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being protected by her adoptive parents. Once you watch this it will leaves you a lasting impression on you, the ending is beautiful and the acting is amazing and totally convincing and it is well casted, but unfortunately with certain parts in this film is not entirely convincing but despite that it will move you, the main lead is likeable and overall, this is a magnificent film.

Cinderella (2015)

When her father unexpectedly dies, young Ella finds herself at the mercy of her cruel stepmother and her scheming stepsisters. Never one to give up hope, Ella’s fortunes begin to change after meeting a dashing stranger. Not suitable for cynical type of person and this is pure escapism and a rainy-day film, the CGI/SFX is truly outstanding and eye catching and you care with these characters, it just a cute and a nice film that is suitable for a family viewing and the main lead is likeable, it is inoffensive and it will silently draw you in from the start.
