Mini Film Reviews Volume 66

Just Jim

A Welsh teenager will become the cool kid of the town if a deal is made with his new American neighbour. Firstly, I admire this film that try to be something different and the story is there. But unfortunately, this is too bleak and too depressing and the characters are hard to like, it doesn’t really hold your interest as the pacing is off, personally I couldn’t get into it with this film.

Confess Fletch

After becoming the prime suspect in multiple murders, Fletch strives to prove his innocence while simultaneously searching for his fiancé’s stolen art collection. I wanted to like this film as this has got potential, it has got a good story but for me personally the main lead is rather bland, it meant to be a comedy but this is generally unfunny and the whole film itself isn’t memorable, this is such a shame as it could have been a good film but it doesn’t really deliver.

Pretty Woman

A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets only to fall in love. Likeable film with a good cast and the chemistry between Richard Gere and Julia Roberts is spot on, the thing is it doesn’t really gel together and it doesn’t flow as much, despite that it still a good film and I see why people like this film and this is enjoyable.

Smile

After witnessing a bizarre, traumatic incident involving a patient, a psychiatrist becomes increasingly convinced she is being threatened by an uncanny entity. The first hour of his film is superb and the acting is amazing and totally believable, the final third of this film becoming rather silly and it loses the psychological element, the ending is generally weak and the film itself hold your interest, the idea is there but I wish they take care with the final third, it still a good film.

Love, Simon

Simon Spier keeps a huge secret from his family, his friends and all his classmates: he’s gay. When that secret is threatened, Simon must face everyone and come to terms with his identity. Relatable and a beautiful film that will capture people heart, this doesn’t feel too forced or too sentimental as this will move you, it is a sensitive topic but this is upbeat and a feel-good experience with a likeable lead, for me personally this is one of the best coming of age film.

The Pale Blue Eye

A world-weary detective is hired to investigate the murder of a West Point cadet. Stymied by the cadets. Code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe. Personally, I was surprised with this film as I didn’t think I would enjoy this, I was wrong as this silently a well-crafted mysteries film with an amazing twist, the acting is amazing and the film itself is totally unpredictable, this is so overrated and this is a magnificent film, this is one of the best Christian Bale films.
