10.Snowpiercer

In a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges. 9.The Adam Project

After accidentally crash landing in 2022, time traveling fighter pilot Adam Reed teams up with his 12-year-old self for a mission to save the future. Not all the film entirely works but it got that fun factor and this is enjoyable, the chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Walker Scobell is spot on, this is another film which is well casted and it doesn’t take itself too seriously, for me personally the villain is the weakest, but despite that this is entertaining and watchable.

8.War Of The Worlds

An alien invasion threatens the future of humanity. The catastrophic nightmare is depicted through the eyes of one American family fighting for survival. Personally, I haven’t seen this film for ages and this is a superb film, this is one of the best Tom Cruise films as this is silently a psychological type of film, the main lead is likeable and this will creep you under your skin, in some ways this is an underrated Steven Spielberg film, this will surprise people with this film.

7.Super 8

During the summer of 1979, a group of friends witness a train crash and investigate subsequent unexplained events in their small town. The mixture of coming of age with the science fiction aspect and that work perfectly, yes, the ending doesn’t really work and if you get past that, it got that emotional core and you will care about with these characters, this will move you as well.

6.The Creator

Against the backdrop of a war between humans and robots with artificial intelligence, a former soldier finds the secret weapon, a robot in the form of a young child. Eye catching film with stunning scenery as this is well made, it can be slightly overcomplicated and the midsection falters but despite that this will move you, it also made you think as this is thought provoking and with a likeable lead, it never feels forced or too sentimental as this is quietly powerful.

5.Love And Monsters

Seven years after he survived the monster apocalypse, lovable hapless Joel leaves his cozy underground bunker behind on a quest to reunite with his high school sweetheart. Quietly this is an enjoyable film, it got a mixture of comedy, fantasy and some element of science fiction which is refreshing, it try to be something different which I admire and it got that emotional core, it is one of those film that will surprise you and the story is fantastic, the midsection falters and some of the violence can be slightly over the top, if you wanted something different this is ideal for you.

4.In Time

In a future where people stop aging at 25, but are engineered to live only one more year, having the means to buy your way out of the situation is a shot at immortal youth. 3.Monsters Vs Aliens

A woman transformed into a giant after she is struck by a meteorite on her wedding day becomes part of a team of monsters sent in by the U.S. government to defeat an alien mastermind trying to take over Earth. One of those film that will divide people as some will like this and some don’t, it can be daft and stupid but it has got an important message of appearances, I’m sure people will connect with that message and this is heartfelt, the vocal in this film is superb and brim with comic one liner, this is watchable as this is easy to watch.

2.I, Robot

In 2035, a technophobic cop investigates a crime that may have been perpetrated by a robot, which leads to a larger threat to humanity. Unpredictable film with twist after twist and it will made you think, it is action packed but it never loses the story itself and that is the key to this film. The ending is fantastic and this is superbly made, this is a character driven film which is needed, it certainly one of the best Will Smith films.

1.Mr Peabody & Sherman

  1. Some good selections there Mark, especially Super 8 – great film.
Here’s some older ones to look out for:
Farenheit 451 (1966) Firemen’s job in the future is to burn books not put fires out.
The Sleeper (1973) – Woody Allen film about man who wakes up in the future. Memorable line, “Are there any more futuristic monsters around here, like with the body of a crab and the head of a social worker?”
Dredd (2012) not the one with Sylvester Stallone. Has some genuinely horrific/scary moments
The Andromeda Strain (1971) Virus arrives on earth from outer space
Galaxy Quest (1999) Actors in a TV sci-fi show become involved with real aliens
District 9 (2009) Aliens are forced to live in a slum ghetto in South Africa.
