Mini Film Reviews Volume 81

All Of Us Strangers

A screenwriter drawn back to his childhood home enters into a fledgling relationship with his downstairs neighbour while discovering a mysterious new way to heal from losing his parents 30 years ago. Firstly, I admire this film that tries to be something different, the story is there and this is well casted. It is one of those film that is hard to follow as it is too overcomplicated, normally with LGBTQ films they normally uplifting, it is depressing and rather bleak when it doesn’t need to be, with these flaws it could have been something special, it doesn’t deliver.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem

After years of being sheltered from the human world, the Turtles set out to win the hearts of New Yorkers and be accepted as normal teenagers through heroic acts. The animation itself is gorgeous to look at and it got amazing visuals, but unfortunately this film seems rather rushed and we never get to know the characters, it isn’t as subtle and it is too action packed and it loses some of the story, it is a real shame as this film have got great potential.

Our Souls At Night

Addie Moore and Louis Walters, a widow and widower who’ve lived next to each other for years. The pair have almost no relationship, but that all changes when Addie tries to make a connection with her neighbour. For me personally it’s the chemistry between Robert Redford and Jane Fonda that made this film good, it is well casted and this is memorable, the only thing it’s the pacing as its slightly off, it doesn’t leave you a lasting impression on you. But despite that this film is a slow burner type of film, if you like those type of film this is ideal for you.

Barbie

Barbie and Ken are having the time of their lives in the colourful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land. However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans. Likeable film which is easy to watch and it has got a good story. The chemistry between Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling is spot on, despite that it can be too over the top, and slightly weird, underneath it all there are great tender moment and it calm down which I like, it might not be for everyone but this isn’t a bad film.

Scoop (2024)

How the BBC obtained the bombshell interview with Prince Andrew about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. One of those film which is intriguing from start to finish. The acting is amazing and especially Rufus Sewell and the story is there, but unfortunately this film lacking the psychological edge and it not as memorable as it should be, it is a sensitive topic for certain people as this film is watchable, silently this will draw you in from the start.

Society Of The Snow

The flight of a rugby team crashes on a glacier in the Andes. The few passengers who survive the crash find themselves in one of the world’s toughest environments to survive. Stunning scenery and this film is quietly powerful, it also perfectly paced as it does hold your interest, I like the way it shies away from the violence and that is refreshing, it could be slightly full on for certain people but it will leave you a lasting impression on you, you will always remember this film as this is life affirming, you will care about with these characters, this is well made.
