Mini Film Review Volume 87

Booksmart

On the eve of their high school graduation, two academic superstars and best friends realize they should have worked less and played more. Determined not to fall short of their peers, the girls try to cram four years of fun into one night. I personally like the genre of the coming-of-age aspect, I also admire this film that try to be something different, but unfortunately the ending is rather weak, this seems too hyperactive and it never calm down. I don’t want to be too harsh on this film, the idea and the story is there, it got potential and it doesn’t deliver.

Perfect Days

Hirayama cleans public toilets in Tokyo, lives his life in simplicity and daily tranquillity. Some encounters also lead him to reflect on himself. Normally I’m into this type of film and the story is there, it isn’t as memorable as it should be and the pacing is rather off, it doesn’t leave you a lasting impression on you, I wanted to like this film but I can’t get into it with this film, in some ways with these flaws it could have been something special, that is a real shame with this.

The Royal Hotel

Backpackers Hanna and Liv takes a job in a remote Australian pub for some extra cash and are confronted with a bunch of unruly locals and a situation that rapidly leaps out of their control. Too be fair with this film it has got brilliant moments and the idea is there, the chemistry is perfect with the two leads, for me personally this film seems rather rushed and not enough backstory, I just think in general it doesn’t gel or flows together, I wanted to like this film. It has got great potential and that is a real shame.

Ashby (2015)

High School student Ed Wallis enters into a friendship with his neighbour, Ashby, a retired CIA assassin who only has a few months left to live. It is one of those film which has got a fantastic cast, plus this is easy to watch with a good story. In some ways this is easy to watch as this is watchable, personally I don’t get the humour to this film and it doesn’t gel or flow together, despite that the idea is there and this is well made, overall, this isn’t a bad film.

Brave (2012)

Determined to make her own paths in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. Eye catching animation film with amazing scenery, it can be funny in places as the characters are great, it is cute and heartfelt at the same time and it will made you smile. The only thing with this film it lacks the charm, despite that this is suitable for all ages.

Fisherman’s Friends: One And All

Following the success of their first album, the Fisherman’s Friends struggle to adjust to their new found fame and work towards a second album. A feel-good experience which you needed as this is easy to watch, you will care about with these characters as this is relatable, it deals with some aspect with mental health and that is important. It will leave you a lasting impression on you as this is memorable, it didn’t take itself too seriously as it never feels forced, this is enjoyable.
