Mini Film Review Volume 89

Stand By Me

Gordie Lachance, a writer, recounts a childhood journey with his friends to find the body of a missing boy. This has got genre which I like with the coming-of-age aspect, the story is there despite the film isn’t as subtle as it needed to be, for me personally I couldn’t get into it. I don’t want to be too harsh on this film, this has got great potential and that is a real shame.

Children Of Men

In 2027, in a chaotic world in which women have somehow become infertile, a former activist agrees to help transport a miraculously pregnant woman to a sanctuary at sea. Unpredictable film which is thought provoking, the acting is believable and totally convincing, personally the comedy element doesn’t really work, the pacing is slightly off but despite that this does draws you in.

The Ice Road

After a remote diamond mine collapses in far northern Canada, ‘big – rig’ ice road driver must lead an impossible rescue mission over a frozen lake to save the trapped miners. Personally, the chemistry between Liam Neeson and Marcus Thomas is superb, but unfortunately the pacing is slightly off, it doesn’t gel or flow together as much, despite that this is a well-made film.

Scarygirl

As her world is shrouded in darkness, a young girl must overcome her fears and travel to a mysterious city of light, save her father from a dangerous scientist and prevent the destruction of her planet. Eye catching film with great characters plus the story is great, this is easy to follow and it got that balance right of the darker element with the lighter aspect. It is another film that doesn’t gel or flow together, it not quite as funny as it needed to be, this is suitable for all ages.

Mission Impossible

An American agent, under false suspicion of disloyalty, must discover and expose the real spy without the help of his organization. Entertaining and action-packed film that never loses the story itself, it never gets too overcomplicated with the flashback element, the only thing is the villain itself isn’t as memorable, it might be dated but this is still a superb film.

Sky High

Set in an era where superheroes are commonly known and accepted, young William Stronghold, the son of the Commander and Jetstream, tries to find a balance between a normal teenager and an extraordinary being. Some people will like this and some don’t as this will divide people, I personally like this as this is light-hearted, you also care about with these characters as it never feels forced or too sentimental, this is funny and enjoyable as this is suitable for all ages and a family viewing.
