Difficult to think of Superman Returns as a hidden gem, more of a blockbuster.
Kubo definitely should be seen by more people.
Here’s some more suggestions for you to consider:
Becket (1964) – King Henry II of England comes to terms with his affection for his close friend and confidant Thomas Becket, who finds his true honor by observing God’s divine will rather than the King’s. Great acting by Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole.
Death and the Maiden (1994) – A political activist is convinced that her guest is a man who once tortured her for the government. Directed by Roman Polanski and starring Sigourney Weaver and Ben Kingsley.
Eye in the Sky (2015) – A military officer in command of an operation to capture terrorists in Kenya, sees her mission escalate when a girl enters the kill zone, triggering an international dispute over the implications of modern warfare. I thought you might have included this one Mark.
Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982) – Film noir parody with a detective uncovering a sinister plot. Characters from classic noir films appear as scenes from various movies interjected into the story. Great Steve Martin comedy with him interacting with old movie stars. Can’t believe it wasn’t seen more.
Ed Wood (1994) – Ambitious but troubled movie director Edward D. Wood Jr. tries his best to fulfill his dreams despite his lack of talent. Directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp. Martin Landau won the Oscar for best Supporting Actor. Also won Oscar for makeup.
Crumb (1994) – An intimate portrait of controversial cartoonist Robert Crumb and his traumatized family. Quirky documentary. Hard to tell if the comedy is deliberate or accidental.
American Splendor (2003) – An original mix of fiction and reality illuminates the life of comic book hero everyman Harvey Pekar. Stars Paul Giamatti who is great as usual.
