Mini Film Reviews Volume 98

The Invention Of Lying

A comedy set in a world where no one has ever lied, until a writer seizes the opportunity for personal gain. I admire this film that try to be something different. It is well casted and they all convince in their roles, but unfortunately this isn’t as subtle and it not as funny, I don’t want to be too harsh on this film as I love the idea to this film, it could have been something special but with these flaws it didn’t quite work.

The Duff

A high school senior instigates a social pecking order revolution after finding out that she has been labelled the DUFF – Designated Ugly Fat Friend – by her pettier, more popular counterparts. Personally, I like the genre of this film and the story is spot on. It is well casted and they all convince in their roles, but unfortunately this isn’t as relatable as it didn’t move you, in some ways this feel rather forced. It can feel like a film that made for a television, I wanted to like this film but for me personally it didn’t deliver.

Gnomeo & Juliet

Gnomeo and Juliet, garden gnomes from opposing communities, fall in love with each other. They have to overcome their respective clans to be together. One of those film which has got an all-star vocal cast, the film itself has got a fantastic story. Despite that the film itself lacks the charm, this isn’t one for the adults as this more suitable for the younger generations. I wanted to like this film as it got great potential, it is such a shame as it didn’t quite deliver.

Lee (2023)

The story of American photographer Lee Miller, a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II. For me personally it’s the acting that made this film good, silently Andy Samberg is excellent as he is a comedian. The pacing is perfect as it does hold your interest, the only thing with this film it feels rather safe and too predictable, plus it didn’t gel or flow together as much, despite that this is a well-made film.

What Dreams May Come

Chris Nielsen finds himself in heaven after his death in a car crash. However, when his grief – stricken wife commit suicide and ends up in hell, he decides to risk his eternal soul to find her. Eye catching film with amazing CGI/SFX. the scenery looks outstanding and it will draw you in, it is heartfelt and it will move you, the only thing is the midsection falters just a little bit, it will touch people heart as this is a relatable film.

Belle (2013)

After his wife’s death, Captain John Lindsay hands over the custody of his illegitimate daughter to his uncle. However, the young girl faces discrimination every day for being black. Diversity type of film which is important. The scenery looks amazing and it silently draw you in from start to finish, it is powerful and it will touch your heart, You will care about with these characters, this is memorable and it will leave you a lasting impression on you.
