Article: Top 5 Steve Coogan Films

5.Philomena

A world – weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman’s search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent. Despite the film itself feels rather safe. Plus it doesn’t offer you anything new or fresh, if you get past that this has got a beautiful story, the chemistry between Steve Coogan and Judi Dench is spot on, overall, this film is watchable and it is well made.

4.Night At The Museum (2006 – 2014)

A newly recruited night security guard at the Museum of Natural History discovers that an ancient curse causes the animals and exhibits on display to come to life and wreck havoc. All these films are consistent and fun. It might not be for everyone and I do like the message of the meaning of family, Steve Coogan play Octavius which is an exhibit who come to life, it has got a fantastic cast and they all convince in their roles, this is a family viewing type of film.

3.Stan & Ollie

Laurel and Hardy, the world’s most famous comedy duo, attempt to reignite their film careers as they embark on what becomes their swan song: a gruelling theatre tour of post – war Britain. It might not gel or flow together as much with this film. for me personally it’s the chemistry between Steve Coogan and John C Reilly that is spot on, the story is brilliant as this is quietly powerful, I reckon with this film it will surprise many people, this is a superb film.

2.Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa

When famous DJ Alan Partridge’s radio station is taken over by a new media conglomerate, it sets in motion a chain of events which see Alan having to work with the police to defuse a potentially violent siege. Not normally my type of film but this film does work perfectly, it can be funny and heartfelt at the same time, this is another film that will surprise people, this is a good film.

1.The Penguin Lessons

A disillusioned Englishman who goes to work in a school in a divided Argentina in 1976 finds his life transformed when he rescues an orphaned penguin from the beach. One of those film that will wow you, I personally connect with this film as it about life and the unlikely friendship aspect, the acting is amazing and totally believable, it will leave you a lasting impression on you.

  1. I saw Stan and Ollie and Alpha Papa and thought he was great in both, although very different films.

I wanted to see Philomena and The Penguin but missed both.

I saw the screening of Dr Strangelove and that was great. He plays 4 parts – on stage!

Two older ones that he was good in are:

24 Hour Party People (2002) about the Madchster era.

The Parole Officer (2001) where he plays a Social Worker.
