Mini Film Reviews Volume 109

Open Season

Boog, a domesticated grizzly bear, lives a content life in Beth’s barn. However, his ideal world turns upside down when he rescues Elliot, a skinny and chatty wild mule deer, from a hunter. Watchable film which is easy to follow and the story is simple. It has got an all-star vocal talent, somewhere in this film the idea is there, but unfortunately this feels rushed and it lacks the charm. It isn’t laugh out loud funny despite it has got great potential, this is a real shame.

Funny Cow

A comedian uses her troubled past as material for her stand – up routine, trying to rise up through the comedy circuit by playing Northern England’s working men’s clubs. All British film which I admire. The story and the idea behind this film is superb, the thing is with this film is not as inspirational as it should be. Plus the flashback element never gets too overcomplicated, this is bleak and depression, for me personally this film doesn’t stand out.

Grave Of The Fireflies

The trials and tribulations of an older brother looking after his little sister in the midst of WWII – stricken – Japan. Gorgeous looking animation film with a sensitive topic. It does draws you in from start to finish, the pacing is perfect as it is spot on. Despite of the sensitive topic you don’t really care about with the two main lead, it also lacks the psychological elements and it doesn’t leave you a lasting impression on you, with these flaws it didn’t quite work for me personally.

Snow Dogs

When a Miami dentist inherits a team of sled dogs, he’s got to learn the trade or lose his pack to a crusty mountain man. Cute and heartwarming film that will touch your heart. It also divides people as some will like this and some don’t, this has got the emotional aspect. It can feel slightly cartoony and it has got some surreal moments, for me personally it doesn’t need it in this type of film, if you wanted a light-hearted film this is ideal for you.

The Space Between Us

Sarah Elliot, an astronaut, dies on Mars while giving birth to her son. The boy visits Earth and starts searching for his father with the help of a clever girl. Eye catching film with stunning scenery. It has got a brilliant cast and they all convince in their roles, it is predictable and it doesn’t offer you anything new or fresh, but overall, this is watchable and easy to follow. The chemistry between the two lead is excellent, this isn’t a bad film as this is a good film.

The Amateur

When his supervisors at the CIA refuse to take action after his wife is killed in a London terrorist attack, a decoder takes matters into his own hands. A slow burner espionage film which has got the emotional aspect, you will care about with these characters. It might be action packed but it never loses the story itself, it nearly a five stars film. I just feel it didn’t gel or flow together as much, that is the only thing with this film. Once you watch this you will remember this film.
