  1. We have different ideas about what constitutes a period drama. I would consider your choices as all being in modern settings. Here are my recommendations:

Sleepy Hollow (1999) – directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny depp. Features a headless horseman.

True Grit (2010) – The Coen Brothers version, much more realistic than the John Wayne version.

Elizabeth (1998) – Cate Blanchett plays the early years of Elizabeth I.

A Man for All Seasons (1966) – The story of Sir Thomas More, who stood up to King Henry VIII when the King rejected the Roman Catholic Church to obtain a divorce and remarry. Played by Paul Schofield. A classic film, probably my favourite of these selections.

Doctor Zhivago (1965) – The original version starring Omar Sharif and Julie Christie. Set during WWI and the October Revolution in Russia. Classic.

Amadeus (1984) – The life and work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (played brilliantly by Tom Hulce) seen through the eyes of his contemporary and rival, Antonio Salieri.

The Madness of King George (1994) – When King George III goes mad, his Lieutenants try to adjust the rules to run the country without his participation. Played brilliantly by Nigel Hawthorne.
