10.The Thursday Murder Club

Four retirees spend their time solving cold case murders for fun, but their casual sleuthing takes a thrilling turn when they find themselves with a real whodunit on their hands. Might not offer you anything new or fresh. Despite that it has got twist and turn throughout this film, it is well casted as they all convince in their roles, this film set in a care home, this is a pretty good film.

9.Ethel & Ernest

Ethel, a maid, gets married to Ernest, a milkman. The couple dreams of a middle – class lifestyle and strives to fulfil their dreams. I just feel in general this animation film feels slightly safe. If you get past that this has got a beautiful story, we see the two main lead from young to old age. The animation itself is stunning, the idea behind this film is superb, it will draw you in from the start.

8.Cry Macho

A retired former rodeo star agrees to do a favour for a friend. He heads to Mexico to bring back his friend’s son who lives with his ex – wife. Despite this film feels slightly predictable it still moved you. it is quietly powerful as it got that emotional aspect, the story and the idea behind this film is spot on, it does deals with aging in this film, if you like a slow burner type of film this is ideal.

7.The Unlikely Pilgrimage Of Harold Fry

Harold is an ordinary man who has passed through life, living on the side lines, until he goes to post a letter one day and just keeps walking. Could be slightly surreal for some people. It does deal with aging and that is refreshing, it could be hard to watch for some people as it deals with suicide, this is silently powerful from start to finish, I reckon it will surprise many people.

6.Hope Springs (2012)

After thirty years of marriage, a middle – aged couple attends an intense, week – long counselling session to work on their relationship. Not quite gel or flow together as much. if you get past that this is a heartfelt film, the casting is perfect as they all convincing in their roles, this is another film which deals with aging. The chemistry with the main two lead is brilliant, this is surprisingly good.

5.The Great Escaper

Bernard Jordan escapes from his care home to attend the 70th Anniversary of the D -Day Landings in France. Quietly powerful as this film will touch people heart. The story and the acting are superb and spot on, this film does focus on the aging aspect and that will move you, it doesn’t feel forced or too sentimental and that is the key, it is sad but it also heartwarming film.

4.Everybody’s Fine (2009)

A widower who realized his only connection to his family was through his wife sets off on an impromptu road trip to reunite with each of his grown children. Personal journey with the aging elements. For me personally it certainly works, you will care about with these characters. It got a sad, heartwarming and touching story, this is well casted, for me personally this is underrated.

3.Quartet

Reggie, Wilf, Cissy and Jean are members of a quartet that vowed never to sing again. But things take a turn when they have to perform in order to save their retirement home for musicians. Too be honest with you I was surprised with this film. It got that underdog type of vibe which is important, the casting is perfect and brim with comic one liner, this is a slow burner and crowd pleaser type of film. It does explore the theme of aging; this film will surprise many people.

2.A Man Called Ove

Ove, an old and ill – tempered widower, constantly enforces the rules of his neighbourhood and soon loses the will to live. However, his life changes when he meets Parvaneh, a pregnant wife. With a multilayered story of aging, loss and life in general. People will relate to that in this film, the acting is amazing and totally convincing, it does deals with suicide as this could be hard to watch for some people, it will leave you a lasting impression on you.

1.A Christmas Carol (2009)

Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old moneylender, is visited by three Christmas spirits on Christmas Eve. Scrooge embarks on a journey of self – redemption to mend his miserly ways. Gorgeous looking animation film with stunning scenery. It will draw you in from start to finish, the theme of this film is aging and that is important, it might be slightly dark for the younger generation. But overall, this is eye catching, it has got an all-star vocal cast: this film is pure escapism and fun.
