Mini Film Reviews Volume 79

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret

When her family moves from the city to the suburbs, 11-year-old Margaret navigates new friends, feelings, and the beginning of adolescence. Firstly, this has got a great story and this is well casted, but unfortunately it hard to connect with this film, this isn’t uplifting as it should be and I don’t want to be too harsh on this film, I wanted to like this film and it has got great potential, for me personally it didn’t really deliver and that is a real shame.

Fall (2022)

When a high-rise climb goes wrong, best friends Becky and Hunter find themselves stuck at the top of a 2,000-foot TV tower. The twist in this film is clever and that is well done, plus this doesn’t feel rush, the thing is with this film the chemistry between the two lead isn’t there. It hasn’t got that emotional aspect and it certainly needed that, I don’t want to be too harsh on this film, this isn’t as exciting as it should be and I wanted to like this film, for me personally with these flaws it could have been something special, unfortunately it doesn’t deliver.

Mad Max: Fury Road

In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max. Personally the idea behind this film is brilliant with amazing set pieces, the chemistry with the two lead is spot on, in some ways the violence can overshadowed this film as this can be hard to watch, despite that this is a well made film with stunning scenery.

The Old Oak

The future for the last remaining pub, The Old Oak, in a village of Northeast England, where people are leaving the land as the mines are closed. Houses are cheap and available, thus making it an ideal location for Syrian refugees. One of those film which the pacing is perfect and it does hold your interest, it can be powerful in places and this is well casted, the first hour in this film doesn’t gel or flow together as much, it might not be as uplifting as much as it should do, it doesn’t leave you a lasting impression on you, despite that this is watchable.

Boston Strangler

Loretta McLaughlin was the reporter who first connected the murders and broke the story of the Boston Strangler. She and Jean Cole challenged the sexism of the early 1960s to report on the city’s most notorious serial killer. It may lack the psychological element to this film but if you get past that, this is quietly powerful and the acting is amazing, it got the crime aspect and the mystery element as well and that work perfectly, it will silently draw you in from the start.

Limitless

A mysterious pill that enables the user to access 100% of his brain’s abilities transforms a struggling writer into a financial wizard, but it also puts him in a new world with many dangers. A clever, intelligent, and thought-provoking film, it will made you think as this film is eye catching from start to finish, it nearly a five-star film but the midsection falters just a little bit, I also admire this film that try to be something different, overall, this film is certainly memorable.
