  1. Nice list Mark. Here’s some others to consider:

Bend it like Beckham (2002) – Two ambitious girls, despite their parents’ wishes, have their hearts set on careers in professional football. Predicted the rise of women’s football.

Raging Bull (1980) – The life of boxer Jake LaMotta, whose violence and temper that led him to the top in the ring destroyed his life outside of it. Brutal in parts but brilliant acting by Robert De Niro.

A League of their Own (1992) – Two sisters join the first female professional baseball league and struggle to help it succeed amid their own growing rivalry. Stars Tom Hanks and Geena Davis. Also features Madonna.

Chariots of Fire (1981) – Two British track athletes, one a determined Jew and the other a devout Christian, are driven to win in the 1924 Olympics as they wrestle with issues of pride and conscience.

The Big Lebowski (1998) – Coen Brothers do ten pin bowling.

Mike Bassett; England Manager (2001) – The manager of England’s national football unexpectedly succumbs to a heart attack, and suddenly the search is on for a replacement. Most people who seem qualified for the position have the good sense to turn it down, and so the responsibility falls to Mike Bassett, a scruffy and loud-mouthed lout whose claim to football fame is leading a previously undistinguished team to a league championship. Ricky Tomlinson very funny.

The Longest Yard (1974) – A sadistic warden asks a former pro quarterback, now serving time in his prison, to put together a team of inmates to take on (and get pummeled by) the guards. Stars Burt Reynolds.
