  1. All Good selections Mark. Here’s some others I would add.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) – In 1963 a War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse. Classic Jack Nicholson.

12 Years a Slave (2013) – In the southern United States, Solomon Northup, a free Black man from upstate New York, is abducted and sold into slavery. Difficult to watch but worth it.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008) – A teenager from the slums of Mumbai becomes a contestant on the show ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati?’ When interrogated under suspicion of cheating, he revisits his past, revealing how he had all the answers. Great Director’s role for Danny Boyle.

Dead Poets Society (1989) – Maverick teacher John Keating returns in 1959 to the prestigious New England boys’ boarding school where he was once a star student, using poetry to embolden his pupils to new heights of self-expression. Great starring role for Robin Williams.

Awakenings (1990) – The victims of an encephalitis epidemic many years ago have been catatonic ever since, but now a new drug offers the prospect of reviving them. Dr. Malcolm Sayer is hired as a clinical physician at a local hospital in the Bronx, despite only having a research background. Stars Robin Williams and Robert De Niro.

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) – World War II American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, serving during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. Based on a true story and the real person is interviewed at the end.

The Rider (2017) – After suffering a near fatal head injury, a young cowboy undertakes a search for new identity and what it means to be a man in the heartland of America. I still think that this is Chloe Zhao’s best film.

  3. A great list of inspirational films. If there is another movie I would add to the list it’s the film “Lion”. It tells the story of an Indian orphan separated from parents at an early age. He embarks on a journey to find his parents after several years of separation. Dev Patel is extraordinary in it. One of the best movies of 2016.

Here’s why I recommend it strongly:
