Mini Film Reviews Volume 100

The Good Half

Renn Wheeland returns home to Cleveland for his mother’s funeral. Once there, he forges new relationships while healing old ones, before confronting his problems and trying to face his grief. Firstly, this film has got a great story. Plus that is the only positive for this film, the flashback element gets too overcomplicated. The other thing is you don’t really care for these characters, I don’t want to be too harsh on this film as it got great potential, for me personally this film doesn’t deliver.

Harold And The Purple Crayon

Inside of his book, adventurous Harold can make anything come to life simply by drawing it. After he grows up and draws himself off the book’s pages and into the physical world, Harold finds he has a lot to learn about real life. The idea behind this film is superb and the CGI/SFX is truly outstanding, I admire this film as it tries to be something different. For me personally the villain isn’t as memorable or sinister. It can feel rather rushed but despite that this is watchable, the casting is perfect and brims with comic one liner, it is a well – made film.

Epic (2013)

A teenager finds herself transported to a deep forest setting where a battle between the forces of good and evil is taking place. She bands together with a ragtag group of characters to save their world and ours. Eye catching adventure film which is suitable for all ages. The visual is amazing and it will draw you in, in general this film isn’t laugh out loud funny, I just feel in general this doesn’t offer you anything new or fresh, overall, this is still a heartwarming film.

Black Dog (2024)

Released from jail, Lang returns to his hometown in Northern China. As part of a dog patrol tasked with clearing stray dogs before the 2008 Olympics, he bonds with a black stray. The two lonely souls embark on a new journey together. Too be honest with you this film doesn’t wow me, It has got a brilliant story with stunning scenery; I also like the unlikely friendships aspect, it doesn’t gel or flow together as much, if you get past that this a slow burner type of film.

Conclave

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with leading one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, selecting a new Pope, he finds himself at the centre of a web of conspiracies and intrigue that could shake the very foundation of the Catholic Church. Unpredictable film with twists and turns. It has got an all – star cast and they all convince in their roles, it will creep you under your skin as it got that psychological element, once you watch this you will always remember this film, it will draw you in and the film in general is memorable.

The Unbreakable Boy

A young boy with both a rare brittle – bone disease and autism transform everyone around him with his joyous, funny, and life – affirming world view. Personally, this film will leave you a lasting impression on you, this is powerful and it will move you without feeling forced. The acting is amazing and totally believable, I personally connect with it as it deals with disability and overcome many obstacles, it will touch people heart and in general this is heartfelt.
