Mini Film Reviews Volume 120

The Zone Of Interest

The commandant of Auschwitz and his wife strive to build a dream life for their family in a house next to the camp. I admire this film that try to be something different, the story and the idea behind this film is superb. Those are the positive; this film is too overcomplicated and there are too many ideas within this film, it lacks the psychological element and it hard to get into with this film, I don’t want to be too harsh on this film, it has got some potential as it got a good subject matter, unfortunately this film didn’t quite work.

Miss Congeniality

A middle – aged female spy goes undercover as a beauty pageant contestant to stop a bomb going off in a major global event that will affect everyone in some way. Entertaining film with a good story and brilliant acting. The idea behind this film is superb; it can feels slightly hyperactive in some places of this film, it not laugh out loud funny, it doesn’t gel or flow together as much, despite that this film is charming and perfectly watchable.

Elio

Elio, an underdog with an active imagination, finds himself inadvertently beamed up to the communiverse, an interplanetary organization with representatives from galaxies far and wide. Fantastic looking animation film and it will draw you in. this is perfectly watchable from start to finish, might not offer you anything new or fresh, it feels too safe and too predictable. But despite that this isn’t a bad film, despite with these flaws it still a heartwarming film.

Ghost

A slain Manhattan banker named Sam reaches out to his lover named Molly with a psychic’s help. Having watched this film I thought it was pretty good. It has got old school CGI/SFX which is genuinely impressive, the chemistry between the two stars is spot on, it doesn’t quite gel or flow together as much; if you get past that it will draw you in, this is pretty good film.

Stillwater

A father travels from Oklahoma to France to help his estranged daughter, who is in prison for a murder she claims she didn’t commit. Gorgeous scenery with a slow burner type of film. The story and the idea behind this film is superb, it will move you as this is quietly powerful, it lacks the psychological aspect and the ending is slightly weak; if you get past that it is totally unpredictable, if you into a slow burner drama film this is ideal for you.

Crazy Rich Asians

Rachel, a professor, dates a man named Nick and looks forward to meeting his family. However, she is shaken up when she learns that Nick belongs to one of the richest families in the country. Just breathtaking as this is the ultimate feel-good experience. The casting is perfect as they all convince in their roles, it never feels forced or too sentimental and that is the key, you will care about with these characters, I reckon this film will surprise many people.

  1. I have to disagree with you about The Zone of Interest. I would give it 5 stars. It has to be one of the most powerful films about the Holocaust. Partly because it leaves so much to your imagination and how it shows that people can normalise any situation – like having a pleasant family life next to an extermination camp. The sound of the train arriving and random gun shots is the the stuff of nightmares.
