When a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community, it’s up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and old seafarer to hunt the beast down. I know people say this is not scary at all but the master of suspense Steven Spielberg at the helm with generally scary scored by John Williams every time in certain scenes, that this film is really nervy and really unpredictable and the acting is great.
9.The Sixth Sense

A young boy Cole Sear who communicates with spirits seeks the help of a disheartened child psychologist. This film is generally nervy and totally unpredictable and some people generally think it not scary enough but this also involved of giving you the creep and get you under your skin, the acting is brilliant and Haley Joel Osment is superb as the innocent young boy who seeing dead people.
8.The Shallow

In the taut thriller/horror, a mere 200 yards from shore, surfer Nancy is attacked by a great white shark, with her short journey to safety becoming the ultimate contest of wills. This is just unbearable tense and generally really nervy but it has got a brilliant story, that just keep you watching from start to finished and Blake Lively is brilliant as the vulnerable young girl who get trap.
7.Orphan

A husband and wife who recently lost their baby adopt a 9-year-old girl who is not nearly as innocent as she claims to be. This is super creepy with stunning performances and with brilliant story telling that just gripped you from start to finish, Isabelle Fuhrman who play Esther really capture the spookiness
6.Sleepy Hollow

Ichabod Crane is sent to Sleepy Hollow to investigate the decapitations of three people, with the culprit being the legendary apparition, The Headless Horseman. This is generally nervy and jump out of your seat at the same time and with likeable characters, it certainly gloomy in the gothic style of filming but it still a well intention of a spooky chiller film.
5.The Shining

A family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future. Once you see this film you won’t every forget it as the formidable Jack Nicholson is a masterclass of acting, waiting for the suspense that fill every scene. All the acting is absolutely amazing under Stanley Kubrick.
4.IT (2017 – 2019)

In the town Derry, the local kids are disappearing one by one, a group of seven kids are united by their horrifying and strange encounters with an evil clown. In the second film the seven kids are now adult and they after to return to Derry after a devastating phone call. Both films are superb in their own way and it just gripped you from start to finish and the acting is superb.
3.Paranormal Activity

A young couple, Katie and Micah, move into a new home and Micah records their life on his video camera. After strange events in the night, Katie admits that as a young child, she has once experienced a ghostly presence in her room. This film is found footage type of film but it certainly work with generally spooky and jump out of your seat, The acting is superb and really convincing with a brilliant story.
2.The Secret Of Marrowbone

This set in 1960s rural America, Three brothers and a sister have just lost their mother. After her death they fear to be separated, so to protect themselves and prevent this from happening they decide to flee to an abandoned farm, a place that is not what it seems, because it hides a dark secret between its walls. This is superb with great acting and brilliant story telling and the film is generally creepy but it has a physiological element to it.
1.The Others

In 1945, in Jersey, A woman who lives in her darkened old family house with her two photosensitive children becomes convinced that the home is haunted. This is a spine chiller with a fable ghost story at the heart of this film, it is generally jumpy with an excellent storytelling and brilliant acting and especially the two kids, in this haunting tale.
All good suggestions Mark, but what about the all time classics The Exorcist and The Omen.
Also, I know you like Peter Jackson films; have you seen Braindead which was an early film he did?
