  1. This is so hard to pick just 10 films from a whole decade; just like when you focused on the 1990s. (How about the 1950s, 60s, and 70s?). You have picked some classics and can’t disagree with them. I’ve tried to pick 10 that were significant and were different in some way to anything else that had gone before.
    1. E.T. Took everyone by storm. Spielberg the master director.
    2. Blue Velvet – as well as Elephant Man this showed that David Lynch was a new master of directing films.
    3. Kurosawa was a great Japanese director and was still making great films in the 1980s – Ran and Kagemusha.
    4. Amadeus – looked at Mozart like a rock star. Very different to any previous biopic of classical composers.
    5. This is Spinal Tap – looked at rock groups in a different way. Was it genuine or a spoof? It was hard to decide.
    6. Cinema Paradiso – a great film about the love of cinema
    7. Blade Runner – was he human or a replicant ? Great new angle on sci-fi films.
    8. Poltergeist – a type of ghost film that we had never seen before.
    9. Back to the Future – the sign of a great film that it still bears repeated watching.
    10. Do The Right Thing – one of Spike Lee’s earliest films that showed how good a film maker he is.
