A hapless young Viking who aspires to hunt dragons becomes the unlikely friend of a young dragon himself and learns there may be more to the creatures than he assumed. Personally of all the How To Train Your Dragon films; this is the best one, it delves deep into the fantasy and the magical realms and that what made this a dark fantasy film, the vocal in this film is spot on, this is perfectly watchable as this is suitable for all ages.
9.Song Of The Sea
Ben, a young Irish boy and his little sister, Saoirse, a girl who can turn into a seal, go on an adventure to free the fairies and save the spirit world. Quietly this film is silently powerful as it will touch people heart. it has got the magical realms and the fantasy plus with supernatural elements; so it has got element of dark fantasy within this film, it is eye catching from start to finish, the story and the idea behind this film is superb, it will surprise people.
8.Kung Fu Panda (2008 – 2024)
To everyone’s surprise, including his own, Po, an overweight, clumsy panda, is chosen as protector of the Valley of Peace. Majestic films which are action packed but it never loses the story itself. It blends of supernatural elements and the magical realms within these films; it does have element of dark fantasy, the villains are perfectly sinister and totally memorable, I like the message of believe in yourself, these are funny and charming.
7.Rise Of The Guardians
When the evil spirit Pitch launches an assault on Earth, the Immortal Guardians team up to protect the innocence of children all around the world. Lovely animation film that is easy to watch. Within this film it has got supernatural elements and magical realms; that what made this film a dark fantasy type, the balance of this film with the darker elements with the comedy aspect, it certainly works, it has got an all-star vocal cast, overall this is memorable.
6.Spirited Away
During her family’s move to the suburbs, a sullen 10-year-old girl wanders into a world ruled by gods, witches and spirits, and where humans are changed into beasts. Needless to says this is a freaky animation film. it has got a psychological elements and that is important, this film has got a horror – inspired elements and unsettling atmosphere, within this film this is a dark fantasy type of film, if you wanted something different this is ideal for you.
5.Kubo And The Two Strings
A young boy named Kubo must locate a magical suit of armour worn by his late father in order to defeat a vengeful spirit from the past. Once you watched this film you will always remember this. The story includes ghosts, vengeful spirits, dark magic and mythic monsters; with that aspect this is a dark fantasy type of film, the ending will move you and the film itself is heartfelt, the characters are memorable, this is a relatable film for people.
4.The Black Cauldron
A young boy and a group of misfits friends embark on a quest to find a dark magic item of ultimate power before a diabolical tyrant can. Remarkable hand drawn animation film that will surprised people. This film features necromancy, an undead army, a tyrannical sorcerer; with those aspect this is a dark fantasy type of film, this isn’t your typical Disney film and that is refreshing, the villain is perfectly sinister and memorable, it is pretty good film.
3.Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio
A father’s wish magically brings a wooden boy to life in Italy, giving him a chance to care for the child. Silently powerful and it never feels forced and that is the key. This delve deep with the folklore aspect with death, spirits and supernatural elements; this is a dark fantasy film that works perfectly, the animation itself is gorgeous to look at, it also got stunning scenery and it will draw you in, it will touch people heart as this is a beautiful film.
2.Wendell & Wild
Two scheming demon brothers, Wendell and Wild, enlist the aid of 13-year-old Kat Elliot to summon them to the Land of the Living. Theme to this film are demons, underworld realms and occult elements as this is a dark fantasy type of film. it has got a multilayered story as this is silently powerful, it also a beautiful coming of age film and you will care about with these characters, once you watch this film you will always remember it, this is superb.
1.9 (2009)
After an apocalyptic war between humans and machines, the world is completely destroyed and void of human life. However, a ragdoll awakens in this world and it holds the key to humanity’s salvation. Keep choosing your own path and build a new future. This is the message to this film, it has got horror – inspired elements with unsettling atmosphere; this is a dark fantasy type of film with sci – fi/horror that blended in, for me personally it certainly works; the story and the idea behind this film is superb, it will leave you a lasting impression on you.
