In this insightful and a fascinating film that have a great story, the acting is great and it blended in well with the war scene and flip back and fourth which work really well. It is convincing and often with some tension and with likeable people make this a compelling watch.

An Australian man travels to Turkey after the Battle of Gallipoli to try and locate his three missing sons. A thought-provoking film that certainly capture a beautiful cinematography every time when there are stunning places around the world with the first-time director in Russell Crowe, it is sensitively handed with a good romantic subplot and all the acting is spot on in this thoughtful film.

8.Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World

During the Napoleonic Wars, a brash British captain pushes his ship and crew to their limits in pursuit of a formidable French war vessel around South America. This is superbly made with an epic scale of water and ship battle in this well-made film, all the acting is so convincing and believable at the same time with a brilliant story that certainly give you an captivating and eye catching worthwhile film.

7.Selma

A chronicle of Dr Martin Luther King, Jr’s campaign to secure equal voting right via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965. Poignancy and moving account of a true story and it is one of those underdog types of film and this is so underrated, everyone should see this film as David Oyelowo in a career making role that he so good and the rest of the acting is superb in a memorable film.

6.The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Free – spirited writer Juliet Ashton forms a life – changing bond with the delightful and eccentric Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, when she decides to write about the book club they formed during the occupation of Guernsey in WWII. With a stellar of star-studded cast that bring a sincere tale of a wonderful story come to life, carefully pacing with a touch of heart-warming and with a bit of romance subplot made this a timeless fun film.

5.True History Of The Kelly Gang

Based on Peter Carey’s novel. The story of Australian bushranger Ned Kelly and his gang as they flee from authorities during the 1870s. In this gritty film that is so different with good acting all round and it gives you an engrossing look in this underrated film which is certainly a fascinating watched and the pacing is just right, it is unique and the story is brilliant and the ending and the film is certainly memorable.

4.Darkest Hour

In May 1940, the fate of World War 2 hangs on Winston Churchill, who must decide whether to negotiate with Adolf Hitler, or fight on knowing that it could mean the end of the British Empire. Gary Oldman is certainly out of this world as he is amazing and totally unrecognizable in an all – star cast that they are really good in this sincere film that cover all the glitz and the glamour, it is well casted and the pacing is just right in this gem of a film that is so watchable.

3.The Book Thief

While subjected to the horrors of World War 2 Germany, Young Liesel finds solace by stealing books and sharing them with others. In the basement of her home, a Jewish refugee is being protected by her adoptive parents. Insightful with a brilliant ending to this film as this is so interesting and really moving at the same time, it is a sincere tale which is sensitively handed in this thoughtful and superbly made film.

2.Dunkirk

Allied soldiers from Belgium, the British Empire, and France are surrounded by the German Army and evacuated during a fierce battle in World War 2. Well-paced of intertwined story from all different perspective which work really well and the other thing is there is a lot of well-known people in this film, the cinematography is outstanding in this thrilling and exciting film.

1.Bridge Of Spies

During the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers. Moving, powerful, uplifting and poignancy film that is so life affirming that certainly give you stunning acting especially from the ever-consistent Tom Hanks and the reliable Mark Rylance is a perfect match in this suspense and unpredictable in this superbly clever film.

  1. Good selections Mark. They are all fairly recent films and there are some older ones worth checking out for their historical depictions.
    Ben Hur, Waterloo, Peterloo, and the Charge of the Light Brigade.
    Some other recent films to include in this list would be The Favourite, Hacksaw Ridge, and 1917.
